Canada Post resumed regular operations on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. Canada Post is indicating that, due to a backlog, continued delays in processing and delivery of mail are expected. Students receiving documents from Alberta Student Aid by mail should expect some delay until the backlog is cleared.

Electronic correspondence between Advanced Education and the public was not affected by the postal strike. Students can continue using the e-Document Upload feature in their Alberta Student Aid account.

We recommend staying on track by logging in to your secure Alberta Student Aid account, MyLoan account and NSLSC.ca account to access your loan information and sign up for digital services, if you have not already done so. If you are not set up for direct deposit, please do so to avoid delays in receiving funds that can be dispersed electronically.

Students who have chosen paper as their preferred correspondence method are encouraged to update their preference to email in their MyLoan account, National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) account, and Alberta Student Aid account.

Scholarship applications and cheques

Scholarships application forms continue to be available for download from the Scholarships section of the Alberta Student Aid website. Students can submit completed applications and supporting documents through the eDocuments Upload feature in their Alberta Student Aid accounts.

With the resumption of regular postal service, Alberta Student Aid will resume mailing scholarship cheques to students. Delivery of scholarship cheques may still be delayed as Canada Post clears the backlog created by the strike.

Applicants who wish to send paper documents to Alberta Student Aid during the postal strike must do so by courier, at the applicant's expense. Please note, paper applications and documents cannot be dropped off in person at Alberta Student Aid offices during the postal strike.

For scholarship cheques that were held by Alberta Student Aid during the strike:

  • ASA will resume mailing scholarship cheques to students.
  • Cheques requested on or after December 13 will be sent via regular mail.
  • Cheques requested prior to December 12 on an urgent basis will be delivered by courier.
    • Delivery times are dependent on courier schedules for regular shipping.
    • Students who have requested to have their cheque couriered on an urgent basis must wait to receive that cheque via courier. If their original scholarship cheque arrives by mail in the meantime, they cannot cash the original cheque as it is no longer valid.
    • Students awaiting payments issued by Alberta Student Aid on or after November 8, 2024 cannot request a cheque re-issue until February 1, 2025, to allow time for backlogged mail to be delivered.

Note: If students have requested a stop payment of their cheques, there could be further delays.

Information for Educational Institutions

  • Educational Institutions that mail disability grant refund cheques directly to Program Financial Support (PFS) can resume mail service with Canada Post.
