Disclosure of Personal Information and Authorizing Others to Act on Your Behalf

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Alberta) (FOIP) governs the collection, use and disclosure of information for Alberta Advanced Education – Alberta Student Aid.

The Application for scholarships and awards provides information about the individuals or entities that Alberta Student Aid may disclose the student’s personal information to. Other disclosures may also be authorized by the FOIP Act.

The student may also give direction to Alberta Student Aid through a Power of Attorney or Consent to Disclose.

Power of Attorney

A student may complete an Alberta Power of Attorney form to allow another person to act on the student’s behalf with respect to funding from Alberta Student Aid and to receive the student’s personal information.

The Power of Attorney form allows a student’s attorney to take any action on their behalf except for  completing an application for scholarships and awards on behalf of a student. The Power of Attorney form grants authority for a 5-year period unless it is revoked sooner by the student.
