Scholarships and awards in this listing are offered by the Government of Alberta and administered by Alberta Student Aid.

WorldSkills Legacy Scholarships

Sponsored by WorldSkills Calgary 2009 and managed through the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund.


  • $500 available for Team Alberta PLUS another $500 available for Team Canada Gold Medal recipients.
  • $9,000 available bi-annually for training to compete in the World Competition over a period of two years.

Eligibility Criteria:

Recipients must:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person (visa students are not eligible)

  • Be an Alberta resident, and to be considered an Alberta resident one of the following conditions must apply:
    - one parent, or legal guardian has maintained permanent residence in Canada for at least 12 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies and be residing in Alberta, or
    - Alberta is the last place the student has lived for twelve (12) consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies, or
    - was married to an Alberta resident immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies.

  • Qualify through Skills Canada Alberta programs

Recipients have up to 5 years to claim the award. They must be enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program a minimum of 1 semester or 1 term of technical training for apprentices (not required for World Competition training).

Selection Process:

Recipients will be selected by Skills Canada Alberta to be eligible for the following awards:

  • Alberta students participating in the Provincial Skills Canada Competition and joining Team Alberta are eligible for a $500 scholarship.
  • Team Alberta members earning a gold medal at the Skills Canada National Competition are eligible for an additional $500 scholarship.
  • Team Canada participants chosen by Skills Canada to compete at the bi-annual World competitions are eligible to receive up to $9,000 to support their training for the WorldSkills Competition.

Application Process:

Skills Canada Alberta will contact eligible recipients. To receive the scholarships students must return an application form that will be provided to them once they accept a position on Team Alberta.
