Alberta Scholarships

The Alberta Government through Alberta Student Aid, and in partnership with post-secondary institutions and other community organizations, offers a suite of scholarships and awards to encourage and reward the excellence of Alberta students.

For most scholarships and awards, an application or a nomination process is required. Research your options because in some instances, you may even be eligible for more than one scholarship or award.

Laurence Decore Award for Student Leadership

The Laurence Decore Award for Student Leadership honours Mr. Laurence Decore, former Edmonton mayor and leader of the Alberta Liberal Party. The original proposal for the Student Leadership Awards was initiated by the Alberta College & Technical Institute Student Executive Council (ACTISEC).

The awards recognize post-secondary students who have demonstrated outstanding dedication and leadership to fellow students and to their community.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must:

  • be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person (visa students are not eligible),
  • be an Alberta resident, and to be considered an Alberta resident one of the following conditions must apply:
    • one parent or legal guardian has maintained permanent residence in Canada for at least twelve (12) consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies and be residing in Alberta, or
    • Alberta is the last place the student has lived for twelve (12) consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies, or
    • the student’s spouse/partner has maintained permanent residence in Alberta for 12 consecutive months prior to the person attending post-secondary.
  • be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program (a minimum 60% course load) at a publicly-funded post-secondary institution in Alberta,
  • be involved in either student government or student societies, clubs or organizations, or involved in student organizations at the provincial or national level or in non-profit community organizations,
  • be in satisfactory academic standing as determined by the post-secondary institution.

Application Process:

Post-secondary institutions nominate eligible students for this award. There are a limited number of awards available to each school and application deadlines vary by school. Students must contact their schools for the application deadline dates (be aware some student deadlines may be months before the school submission deadlines).

Applicants must include with the application:

  1. A detailed description of your involvement and accomplishments in student government or student societies, clubs or organizations, or student organizations at the provincial or national level or in non-profit community organizations, and
  2. A related letter of reference.
