Frequently Asked Questions about the First Period Apprentice Award
The First Period Apprentice Award is intended to assist with your school expenses for first period technical training. You do not have to pay back the money.
How to Apply for the Award
What if I don’t have a MyTradesecrets account?
You will need to go to the Tradesecrets website and follow the instructions to set up an account.

What if I made an error in submitting the requested personal information in MyTradesecrets?
Call the Student Aid Alberta Service Centre (SAASC) to correct any errors:
You can call the Student Aid Alberta Service Centre (SAASC) toll free to correct an error in your address. You should also correct your address on your MyTradesecrets account as well. The two systems are not connected.
Is the award given automatically if my personal information is already on file?
No. To receive the award, you must request the award by providing the specific personal information when you are prompted to do so in your MyTradesecrets account.
What if I have registered for first period technical training and applied for the First Period Apprentice Award, then decide to challenge the first exam period?
When you log into your secure MyTradesecrets account, you can opt out of receiving the award up to three weeks before your technical training start date.
If your technical training is starting sooner than in three weeks, you will no longer be able to opt out of receiving the award and the $750 award will be mailed to you. If you choose to enter first period technical training at a later date, you will no longer be eligible for the award (if you have received and cashed your award cheque).
If I think I am eligible, what should I do?
If you are eligible, you will be prompted to request the award by entering specific personal information after you log in to your MyTradesecrets account.
You can apply for this award up to and including your last day in class.
Once you have submitted your personal information, Student Aid Alberta will process and issue your $750 award. The award cheque will be mailed to you.
Am I still eligible if I attended first period technical training before August 1, 2015?
No. This award is only available if your first day of first period technical training begins on or after August 1, 2015.
Am I still eligible if I completed first period technical training/full certificate in another trade, and I am now taking first period technical training for a different trade?
You will receive the $750 First Period Apprentice Award as long as you meet the eligibility criteria. You can only receive this award once in your lifetime.
Are all first year hairstyling apprentice programs eligible for the First Period Apprentice Award?
No. Only first year hairstyling apprentices studying at the Delmar College of Hair & Esthetics or M.C. College are eligible for the award.
Are first year apprentices that receive technical training at a union facility eligible for the First Period Apprentice Award?
Yes. Apprentices participating in recognized first period technical training at a union faciity meeting the eligibility criteria are eligible for the First Period Apprentice Award. See eligibility criteria:
Receiving Your Award
When will I receive the $750 First Period Apprentice Award?
If you are eligible, you will be prompted to enter specific personal information when you log in to your MyTradesecrets account. If you complete this step as soon as you are registered for technical training, you could receive the $750 before the class start date. However, most often the award will be issued while you are attending your technical training classes.
Can the $750 First Period Apprentice Award be direct deposited?
No. Student Aid Alberta will mail the cheque to the address you provided in MyTradesecrets.
What if I have provided all of the requested personal information in MyTradesecrets and then decide that I no longer want to apply for the $750 First Period Apprentice Award?
When you log in to your secure MyTradesecrets account, you can opt out of receiving the award up to three weeks before your technical training start date.
If your technical training is starting sooner than in three weeks, you will no longer be able to opt out of receiving the award. You may mail the cheque back to Student Aid Alberta if you do not want to accept the award:
What if I do not want to supply the requested personal information?
Applying for the $750 First Period Apprentice Award is optional. If you do not provide the requested personal information, you will not receive the award. The award does not affect your status as an apprentice if you choose to not apply.
Will I receive the award each time I enter first period technical training?
No. You can only receive this award once.
I have not received my cheque in the mail. What should I do?
