Designated Schools Outside Canada

Designation is the process through which schools and their programs are deemed eligible for government student financial assistance. Schools and their programs must be designated (approved) by Alberta Student Aid before students can receive student loans and grants.

Your program must be a full-time program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate.

If your program is not listed, use the following resources to determine if it meets the criteria to become designated:

Schools in the United States

Your school must be approved for Title IV Status by the United States Department of Education. Use the Federal School Code Search to find out if your school is approved for this status. 

If your school is not listed, you will not be eligible for student aid.

Schools Outside North America

Your school must:

  1. Have been in continuous operation for a minimum of two years
  2. Be accredited or approved for student aid in its home country
  3. Be listed in at least one of the following:

Medical Degree Programs Outside of North America

If you are applying for funding for a medical degree program outside of North America, your school must:

  1. Have been in continuous operation for a minimum of 10 years
  2. Be accredited or approved for student aid in its home country
  3. Be listed in at least one of these medical school directories:

Request Designation Review

Once you have determined your school can be designated, submit a Request Designation Review form.
A review normally takes 1-3 weeks and you will be notified of the results by mail.
